Types of Classes

FAQs

  • What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha yoga means the bringing together or union of the pranic and mental energies.  Ha represents prana, the first unit energy.  Tha represents the energy of the mind.  This is practiced using a systemised series of physical poses, pranayama, and meditation.

  • What is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a practice of asana (physical poses) that are maitained for at least three minutes, mainly floor based, moving into the deeper tissues of the body.

  • What is Asana?

Asana is a Sanskrit word which describes the physical poses we practice in hatha yoga.

  • Can I view a class on my phone?

Yes, you can use any internet enabled device.   You'll need to download the Zoom app, and be sure to join the class 10-15 mins before, so you can adjust your screen position for optimal viewing. Please click on joining an online class for a step by step guide.

  • What is the best online Yoga for me?

Yoga is a very personal practice, whether it's online or in the regular class environment.  With time, and with trying different types of yoga, you will settle into something that suits you.  Be open to the whole experience of yoga, come to your mat with an open mind and an open heart, and what is best for you will evolve naturally.

  • How do I pay for an online class?

Once you have chosen the online class that you want to join, click on the link in the calendar, and you will be prompted to pay via Paypal.  Sign into your Paypal account, or you can pay using a card of your choice as a Paypal Guest Checkout.

  • Do I need any equipment?

A mat is the basic equipment you need to enjoy your practice.  However, if you dont have one when you first start, just ensure that you have enough space to move, and that you are not going to slip on the surface you are using.....equipment can come at a later date, and you can always ask for advice when you are ready to purchase your first mat.

  • What time should I arrive to class?

Give yourself a good ten to fifteen minutes before the start of class to join.  This gives you the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the setting up of your tech, the positioning of your camera so that the teacher can best see you.  It also gives you the opportunity to settle yourself and enjoy your new online yoga community as well.  Try not to rush to your practice and leave it until the last minute, and most definitely dont be late.

  • Can I eat before yoga?

This is a resounding no.  Following a light meal, its suggesteed to leave it two to three hours before doing yoga, and a heavy meal is four hours.  So try and keep this in mind when you book your class.

  • How do I tell the teacher about my injury or health condition?

Before joining a class there is a student health questionnaire that needs to be completed and returned to us.  Alternatively you can contact me using any of the available means, and we can discuss in more detail your concerns.

  • Can I play music during a class?

During the class, your mic will be muted, so if you want to play music in the background, then by all means, go ahead.  Just remember to keep the volume to a level where you can hear the instruction of the teacher.

  • How can I help prevent myself getting injured?

Always, always, and I'll say it one more time, always, work within your capacity.  Yoga is not about pain or injury.  There is no competition in yoga, especially with yourself, so stay within what feels good for you, and stay the right side of pain and injury.

  • What should I wear for Yoga?

Keep it nice and simple, loose and comfortable.  Something that you can move freely in.  Theres also no footwear required....not even socks, so take them off and feel the freedom of being barefoot.

  • Should I bring a water bottle?

Yes, please bring a water bottle with you, and take regular sips from it throughout your practice.

  • Can I join the class on more than one device?

Yes, once you have signed up for a class, you can sign in on as many devices as you like.  It enables the teacher to see you from multiple angles, and will benefit your practice.

  • Can my friend or family member join in the class?

Yes, they are more than welcome to join a class.  Yoga is inclusive, so the more the merrier.   They will have to join seperately to you, and book the class in their own name.

  • Can I broadcast the class?

If you have obtained prior permission, or as a part of a collaboration, then yes, broadcasting of the class is permitted.  Other than this, classes are intended for single personal use only.

  • What is my edge?

Your edge is a term used in yoga to represent reaching the point where you no longer feel comfortable in a pose.  We want to stay within our capabilities, to ensure a safe practice.

  • Can I stop if I feel tired?

Yes, most definitely, it is good practice to know not to push yourself too far.  Regardless of who is teaching, it is your practice, and nobody knows your body as well as you.  So if you need to stop and rest, just take childs pose, or a seated posture, and join in again when you feel ready.

  • Can I ask questions during class?

Yes, please ask questions when you feel you need to.  The classes are muted, so that there is not interference of background sound, so you can ask questions by typing them into the chat section.

  • Can I leave class early?

Savasana is a pose at the end of class used to relax the body and assimilate the practice.  Leaving early means missing this from the practice, so it is best to stay until the end.

  • What is Meditation?

Meditation is a systemised process of moving beyond the thoughts of the mind to a place of calm and stillness, relieving stress and anxiety along with other mental health issues.

  • What is Pranayama?

Pranayama is the practice of yoga using the breath.  Often known as breath -work.

  • Do I have to be a member to join a class?

Absolutley not.  The online yoga classes are open to everyone of all levels.  Simply pay per class.   No signing up fee, no monthly membership fees.

Who I am

Hi, my name is Simon.  My journey into yoga started in 2005, when an unexpected injury to my lower back took me into the beautiful world of Ayurveda. After spending two months as an inpatient in a tiny cottage hospital next to the paddy fields in the heart of rural Kerala, my journey into yoga was only just beginning. In the hands of my Ayurvedic doctor, who was also a Yoga teacher and Kalaripayattu master, my inexorable recovery began by simply performing one Surya Namaskar as my daily practice. Three months later I returned to Kerala to deepen my study of all things Yogic.
Since my return to Wales I have completed a three year British Wheel of Yoga Diploma - the gold standard yoga teacher qualification in the UK. I currently teach Hatha and Yin Yoga throughout South Wales. I believe that yoga is accessible for all. Hence my teaching is not confined to the class environment but also reaches out to the wider community including the corporate world, health and well being within the NHS and local schools. Private tuition for individuals or small groups is also an increasing popular choice for those requiring a more bespoke experience.
As long as you have breath in your body there is Yoga for you.

“I love my classes with Simon, every time I learn something new!
Simon really helps you relax and teaches you to focus.
I am training for a marathon at this current time. If I miss a yoga class, I will normally get a cramp . My classes help me to stretch my whole body to avoid this . It has also helped me mentally be more confident and deal with anxieties.
There are not many yoga classes like Simon's he helps you understand the practice to whole new level.
A beautiful human being , I now consider a friend :) .
